Customer avatar (also called buyer persona) is a fictional character that represent your ideal prospect. It helps you understand who they are, how they live, what they want and how you can serve them with your products/service.
By talking their lingo and describing their pains and struggles you make them feel important and cared for. And when you show how you can help them with that specific issue, they feel like you know what they are experiencing and that you are the right person for them.
Some of the information you can get by surveys and questionnaires, some you will know from your experience, for some just make an assumptions and correct later if necessary.
